On October 24th, Chief Chris Uibel presented Operation GEM during a press conference held at Roxana VFC headquarters. During the press conference Councilman Rob Arlett and Chief Uibel announced the multi-step pilot program. This program will encompass recruitment and retention for all ages 10 and up. Roxana VFC, Chief Uibel and Councilman Arlett are spearheading this pilot program along with support from the State Fire Chief's Association, Sussex County Fire Chief's Association, Sussex County Firefighter's Association and Delaware State Fire School.
During the press conference Chief Uibel announced that the Roxana VFC is partnering with the Indian River School District and will begin a Cadet program within Millsboro Middle School, create an after school program with Selbyville Middle School and work with IRSD's Adult Education program. The students in MMS will learn the basics of first-aid, fire safety and leadership skills. MMS has accepted this program and will be taught by Chief Uibel during the WIN (what I need) enrichment period.
Along with partnering with the IRSD, Roxana will host a Cadet Program at Station 90 starting November 6th at 6 pm. These cadets will be mentored by the volunteers of the Roxana VFC and can expect to learn the same values and lessons plus a ride-along program, parade details and other volunteer functions.
All cadets and students participating in Operation GEM can expect to be recognized in the Roxana VFC, the IRSD, and throughout the community.
Operation GEM is an all inclusive recruitment pilot program with many partnering organizations. Roxana is excited and proud to begin this pilot program. Stayed tuned for much more to come from Operation GEM and come check us out on November 6th at 6 pm.
